What Is Dolly Parton Doing Here?
On science, action, and those who make knowledge possible
On 26 August 2026, I opened Nature and came across a name I did not expect to find there.
Dolly Parton.
But hers was not an unfamiliar name to me. She was eight years older than I am, and I grew up with her in the United States. Her voice, her music, and the American public world of which she gradually became a part belonged to the landscape of my own childhood and youth. We lived through many of the same decades, although our lives were, of course, very different.
To encounter her again, so many years later, in Nature was therefore unexpected.
Not in a piece about popular culture. Not as a curious footnote in the history of music. The headline read:
“Dolly Parton dies aged 80 – researchers celebrate her contributions to science.”
Dolly Parton had died at the age of 80. And researchers were remembering her as someone who had contributed to science.
I had to stop for a moment.
What is Dolly Parton doing here?
She was a country singer, songwriter, actor and businesswoman. She wrote Jolene and I Will Always Love You. She performed in high heels, wigs and sequins, and made self-irony part of her public persona.
She was not an immunologist. She did not have a doctorate in medicine. She did not work in a laboratory.
And yet Nature writes about her contribution to science.
That is precisely what makes the article interesting.
One million dollars
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020, Dolly Parton donated one million dollars to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Tennessee.
The money established the Dolly Parton COVID-19 Research Fund and supported research that became part of the early work connected to the development of Moderna’s COVID vaccine. Her fund was later acknowledged in scientific publications from the research community.
She did not develop the vaccine.
She did something else.
She made research possible.
The difference may appear small, but philosophically it is significant.
We often speak about science as though knowledge comes into being inside the laboratory. The researcher formulates the question, conducts the experiment, analyses the results and publishes the paper.
But the laboratory never exists on its own.
It needs money. Institutions. Technicians. Research participants. Universities. Libraries. Infrastructure. Trust. A society that believes research is worth supporting.
And sometimes the laboratory needs a country singer.
The books
But Dolly Parton’s relationship to knowledge began long before the pandemic.
Her father could neither read nor write. She later spoke about how deeply this had affected him. In 1995 she therefore established the Imagination Library in her home county of Sevier County, Tennessee.
The idea was astonishingly simple.
Children should receive books.
Not merely access to a library. Not a political programme on literacy. Not an information campaign directed at parents.
A book should arrive at the child’s home in the mail. With the child’s own name on it.
Every month.
From birth until the age of five.
The scheme grew far beyond Tennessee. Today it operates in several countries and has sent out hundreds of millions of books. Research on the programme suggests that families receiving the books tend to read together more often, have more books in the home and may develop stronger early literacy.
Here, the connection to science becomes even more interesting.
For where does science actually begin?
Perhaps not at the microscope.
Perhaps it begins when a child opens a book.
Before the laboratory
We associate science with knowledge, but knowledge has preconditions.
A human being must be able to read.
Must be able to ask questions.
Must be able to imagine that the world could be different from the way it appears at this moment.
Must be able to wonder.
Must learn that there are things not yet known.
In that sense, a child’s first book belongs to the history of knowledge long before the scientific article does.
Dolly Parton probably did not understand this as an epistemological theory. She did not need to.
She saw a problem.
Her father could not read.
Children needed books.
So she sent them books.
That is practical philosophy in a remarkably pure form.
Seeing a need
When Parton received the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy in 2022, she described her way of acting in simple terms: she saw a need, and if she was able to do something about it, she did.
It sounds almost too simple.
Philosophy has spent millennia asking what the good is. What is right action? What do we owe to other human beings? What is responsibility? What is justice?
Dolly Parton’s answer was not a theory.
She acted.
Aristotle might have recognised something here. Practical wisdom — phronesis — does not consist primarily in being able to formulate universal rules. It shows itself in the capacity to see what a concrete situation requires.
A child lacks books.
A family has lost its home in a wildfire.
A hospital needs money.
A pandemic is spreading.
Researchers need resources.
What can I do?
It is a modest question.
But perhaps it is one of the most important ethical questions we can ask.
Between knowledge and action
Modern societies tend to divide human activity into specialised domains.
Researchers do research.
Politicians govern.
Doctors treat.
Teachers teach.
Artists create.
Philanthropists give money.
But reality does not always respect these boundaries.
Dolly Parton moved between them.
She used money earned through music to fund medical research. She used her fame to promote vaccination. She drew on the experience of growing up in a poor Appalachian family to build an international literacy programme.
She did not do this by becoming a scientist.
She did it by being Dolly Parton.
That may be the most interesting point.
She did not possess the knowledge the researchers had.
But the researchers did not necessarily possess what she had.
She had financial resources.
She had public trust.
She could reach people whom research institutions might not reach.
She could stand in front of a camera, receive a vaccine and show millions of people that she trusted the research.
Science also needs these connections to the world beyond the laboratory.
Who creates science?
We rightly celebrate the researcher who makes the discovery.
The name appears on the paper.
The institution appears beneath the name.
The references point to earlier research.
But around every scientific discovery there is a much larger community.
Someone built the laboratory.
Someone provided the funding.
Someone gave the blood sample.
Someone participated in the trial.
Someone taught the researcher science when she was fourteen.
Someone taught her to read.
Someone gave her the first book.
Knowledge is far more collective than the author lists of scientific papers can reveal.
That is why Dolly Parton’s appearance in Nature is not really so strange.
Perhaps what is strange is that we are surprised.
The outside of science
Science likes to draw boundaries.
It has to.
It must distinguish documented knowledge from assertion, research from opinion, evidence from belief.
But at the same time there is an outside on which science is completely dependent.
Trust.
Curiosity.
Education.
Public life.
Economics.
Solidarity.
People who believe that knowledge is worth protecting.
Dolly Parton stood on this outside.
And precisely for that reason, she was able to influence what happened on the inside.
The community of knowledge
There is a common idea that those who cannot themselves produce scientific knowledge are merely its recipients.
The researchers know.
The rest of us are informed.
Dolly Parton’s story shows that the relationship is more reciprocal.
Society receives knowledge from science.
But science also receives something from society.
Money.
Trust in institutions.
Children who learn to read.
Students who choose to become researchers.
People who participate in studies.
And sometimes one million dollars from a country singer in Tennessee.
Science is therefore not only a method.
It is also a human community.

I return to the question I asked when I saw her photograph on the Nature website.
What is Dolly Parton doing here?
The question now means a little more to me than it did when I first asked it.
Because “here” is not only Nature.
She also belongs to an American landscape in which I myself grew up, a voice from a time that lies far behind me and yet remains present in memory.
And now I encounter her again in an entirely different place: in the midst of the world of science.
The answer may be quite simple.
She belongs there too.
Not because she was a scientist.
But because science is never created by scientists alone.
It is also created by people who make knowledge possible.
She sent books to children who could not yet read.
She supported researchers trying to understand a virus no one had seen before.
She used her public voice in support of vaccines and public health.
She saw needs.
And she acted.
Perhaps we sometimes make science too small when we place it within the walls of universities and laboratories.
The history of knowledge begins elsewhere too.
At a kitchen table.
In a classroom.
At a mailbox where a child is waiting for a book bearing their own name.
And sometimes it begins with a woman in sequins asking:
What can I do?
